Montgomery St. Called the "Wall Street of the West." The West's financial hub. East side of block harbors one of the finest clusters of 1850s San Francisco buildings. San Francisco's first brick building was built at the corner of California and Montgomery streets in 1849. It was destroyed in one of the several large fires that damaged San Francisco even before the 1906 earthquake. Most gutted by 1906 fire but reconstructed as they had been. Jackson Square, with many buildings erected in the early 1850's, and the only survivors of the 1906 earthquake and fire, is a short walk from Embarcadero Center on the edge of the Financial District. The Moscone Convention Center host some of the largest venues on the west coast.
The Bank of America building at 555 California street was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River from 1969-1972 until it was surpassed by the Transamerica Pyramid. A 17th floor roof top park at 343 Sansome Street has great views of other high rises including the Transamerica Pyramid.
